Fundamentals of Excavation, Trenching, and Pipe Safety
April 27, 2026 (Monday)
8:00 am - 10:00 am (2 hours)
Location: In-Person HRWA Waikoloa Office and Live-Virtual

This course provides system personnel with comprehensive instruction on safe and effective trenching and excavation practices. Participants will gain an understanding of proper shoring methods, including the selection and safe use of various types of shoring equipment.

Basic Fire Extinguisher Safety
April 28, 2026 (Tuesday)
9:00 am - 10:30 am (1.5 hours)

This training introduces basic fire extinguisher safety for water and wastewater professionals. Participants will learn the fundamentals of fire behavior through the fire triangle, identify the different classes of fires (A, B, C, D, and K), and understand how to select the appropriate extinguisher for each situation.​ ​The session will also cover proper inspection and maintenance practices, OSHA requirements for portable fire extinguishers, and workplace fire safety planning.

Safety Around Drinking Water Wells
April 29, 2026 (Wednesday)

Safety housekeeping of the well site will help prevent an accident to operators or employees working near or around the well/water source.  Safety control around the well site is necessary to prevent contamination or pollution of the well/water source that could affect the health and safety of the consumer drinking water quality.

Soil Classifications
April 30, 2026 (Thursday)

This presentation covers soil types and classifies them into types, identifying soil mechanics, strength, cohesiveness and the soil type response to environmental occurrences and the effects on trenching safety. Different types of trench collapse mechanisms and their causes are presented to improve worker safety.

Working in Hot Conditions

This presentation will cover the various health threats that present themselves in a work environment, the health threats that they represent, and methods of mitigating these threats to prevent heat casualties from occurring on the job.

PPE

This presentation will cover the regulations surrounding PPE, the various different types of PPE, the correct maintenance of the equipment, the hazardous conditions against which they protect, and the proper usage of the equipment to ensure that workers are always safe on the job.

Waste Stabilization Ponds
May 6, 2026 (Wednesday)
7:30 am - 3:30 pm, with lunch break

0.9 Wastewater CEU
This eight-hour course provides students with an understanding of various Waste Stabilization Pond designs and the keys to their successful operation. By the end of the course, students will demonstrate knowledge of common designs, including non-aerated and aerated ponds, flow characteristics, and inlet/outlet structures. Topics include the operation of aerobic, anaerobic, and facultative ponds; pond microorganisms; loading rates; efficiency; sludge and scum removal; maintenance; troubleshooting; testing tools; and safety.
​This course is offered at no cost.

*Water CEU: Attendees are not eligible to receive repeat Water CEUs with DOH for a class if they have taken the same class in the past.

*Wastewater CEU: Attendees taking repeat Wastewater CEU courses may receive half of the original Wastewater CEU credit as long as a 6-year period has passed between classes and if the class is approved for repeat credits.
